Ireland has taken an important step toward more advanced driver-assistance technology on its roads. Recent legal changes now provide a framework for Level 2 systems, while Tesla is engaging with Irish authorities and the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) regarding potential approval of FSD (Supervised).
A step forward — not self-driving
It is tempting to read headlines about Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology and picture a car that can simply take over. That is not what this update means.
Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) is a Level 2 or Level 2+ driver-assistance system. It can combine steering, acceleration and braking, but the driver must remain alert, watch the road continuously and be ready to take control immediately. Legally, the person in the driver’s seat remains responsible for the vehicle at all times.
In other words, the technology may assist with the drive, but it does not replace the driver.
What has changed in Ireland?
In March, changes to the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 were commenced, formally enabling Level 2 vehicle technology to be used on Irish public roads. This gives Ireland a clearer legal route for advanced assistance systems that can manage steering and speed together.
For Tesla owners, that makes Ireland’s position more significant than before. The Department of Transport has confirmed that Tesla is engaging with Irish authorities, including the NSAI, about its FSD system. However, there is no confirmed approval date, and any rollout remains dependent on wider national and EU regulatory processes.
That distinction matters: the law has opened a door, but Tesla FSD (Supervised) has not simply switched on for Irish cars.
Why Tesla owners are watching
Tesla’s existing technology already gives drivers a glimpse of assisted driving through features such as adaptive cruise control, lane support and Autosteer in supported situations. A future FSD (Supervised) rollout could potentially extend that assistance to more complex driving tasks, such as navigating junctions, responding to traffic flow and following a route more actively.
For a country like Ireland, the appeal is easy to understand. Daily motorway commutes, busy urban routes around Dublin, and long intercity trips could all benefit from technology designed to reduce the repetitive workload of driving.
But Irish roads also present the exact conditions that make careful rollout essential: narrow rural lanes, inconsistent markings, heavy rain, changing visibility and complex town-centre layouts. Industry voices have stressed that these systems need to be introduced in phases and that their reliability depends heavily on road conditions and infrastructure.
The responsibility remains human
The most important message for drivers is simple: supervision is not optional.
Level 2 systems can be impressive, but they can also create overconfidence. The driver must be able to react instantly, not after checking a phone, replying to a message or assuming the vehicle has understood every situation ahead. Experts speaking to RTÉ highlighted that this immediate handover requirement remains a central safety question for hands-free-style Level 2+ assistance.
A useful way to think about it is this: Tesla’s software can be an exceptionally capable co-driver, but it is not the licensed driver.
What happens next?
Ireland is developing a broader strategy for connected and automated vehicles, involving bodies including local authorities, the Road Safety Authority, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and An Garda Síochána. The goal is to make sure policy, road infrastructure, data-sharing and public safety develop alongside the technology.
Tesla’s discussions with the Irish authorities are promising for owners and EV enthusiasts, but the timeline is still uncertain. For now, Ireland’s Level 2 update should be viewed as a meaningful foundation: a signal that the country is preparing for more capable driver-assistance systems, while keeping safety and driver accountability firmly at the centre.
The future of driving in Ireland may be becoming more automated, but for the foreseeable future, it will still require a fully engaged human behind the wheel.
